Hearing Loss and Relationships: Communicating Better With Your Partner
February 15, 2025Starting with hearing aids is an adjustment. Patients who understand the adaptation process from the beginning are far more likely to succeed with their devices than those who expect instant perfection. Here’s what to actually expect.
The First Two Weeks
Your brain hasn’t been processing normal sound input for some time. When hearing aids restore that input, everything can sound too loud, tinny, or strange. This is normal. Your auditory system needs time to recalibrate — and it will. Most patients report significant improvement in comfort within the first two to four weeks of consistent wear.
Wear Them Consistently
The single biggest predictor of hearing aid success is consistent daily use. Wearing devices for a few hours here and there prevents adaptation. Commit to wearing them during all waking hours, even when it’s uncomfortable at first.
Expect Multiple Adjustments
Hearing aids are not set-and-forget devices. Your provider will want to see you for follow-up appointments to fine-tune settings based on your real-world experience. These adjustments are included in your care — use them.
Give It 30-90 Days
Most audiologists consider 30-90 days a fair evaluation period for new hearing aids. Returning devices within the first week because they feel different is giving up before adaptation has had a chance to work.
Embrace Hearing supports new wearers through the full adaptation process. We’re available for questions, adjustments, and follow-ups throughout your first year.
