Better Hearing and Speech Month: Is It Time for Your Evaluation?
May 15, 2026Summer is the most demanding season for hearing aids. The combination of heat, humidity, perspiration, and water activities creates conditions that challenge even well-made devices. Here’s how to protect your investment and maintain consistent performance through the warmest months.
The Parked Car Problem
Interior temperatures in a parked vehicle on a summer day routinely exceed 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This level of heat can deform hearing aid shells, drain or damage batteries, and compromise electronic components. Never leave hearing aids in a car, even briefly. Keep them on your person or in a shaded bag.
Sweat Management
Sweat carries minerals and salts that corrode hearing aid components over time. A nightly drying routine using an electronic hearing aid dehumidifier should be treated as non-negotiable during summer months. If you’re engaging in high-activity exercise, sweat-resistant sleeves or covers add another layer of protection during the activity itself.
Water Activities
Unless your hearing aids carry a confirmed IP68 rating with verified submersion testing by the manufacturer, treat them as non-waterproof. “Water resistant” is not the same as waterproof. Remove devices before swimming, kayaking, water parks, or any activity where immersion is likely. If your devices do get wet, let them dry in a desiccant or dehumidifier — don’t use a hair dryer or microwave.
When to Come In
If your hearing aids are performing inconsistently during summer — cutting out, sounding distorted, or draining batteries faster than usual — these are signs of moisture accumulation or heat damage that a professional cleaning can often address. Don’t wait for complete failure.
Embrace Hearing is available for summer cleaning and maintenance appointments. Keep your devices performing well all season long.
