Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: Still Preventable, Still Happening
April 15, 2026Spring is the natural time to refresh routines, and your hearing aids deserve attention alongside everything else on the list. A thorough cleaning and system check at the start of spring prepares your devices for the warm months ahead.
Daily Cleaning Habits That Matter
Wipe down your hearing aids with a dry, soft cloth every evening. This removes oils, skin cells, and environmental debris that accumulate through the day. Avoid using alcohol wipes or household cleaners — these can damage housing materials and corrode internal components.
Wax Guard and Dome Replacement
Earwax is the most common cause of muffled or missing sound in hearing aids. Wax guards — the small mesh filters at the receiver end of the device — should be replaced regularly, typically every 1-3 months depending on how much wax you produce. If your aids have suddenly gotten quieter, a wax guard replacement is the first thing to check.
Professional Cleaning
Spring is a good time for a professional cleaning, even if your aids seem to be working well. A hearing care professional can use specialized tools to clean internal components, check microphone ports, and inspect for developing issues before they affect performance.
Check for Needed Repairs
Inspect your devices for cracked tubing (on BTE models), worn earmold material, or any visible damage. Tubing on BTE hearing aids typically needs replacement annually — cracked or hardened tubing reduces sound quality significantly.
